Orchard Apple Sculpture
Concept:
A focal piece, for a not-so-typical orchard.
The location offers multiple aspects, from approaching the house along the driveway, framed by the orchard archway and grapevines. Also the from house - the kitchen, bedroom and outdoor area. From the Orchard itself the sculpture will offer views from the pétanque court, flying fox, and as the trees mature, glimpses between them.
The nonagon-apple form was designed exactly with this in mind. As an orchard piece - signalling from a distance what the trees offer, and up close emphasizing the simple pleasure of enjoying a piece of fruit.
The overall round shape, comprised of flat facets, produces sharp contrast in light and shadow that change with the sun’s movement. The apple’s tilted angle gives a feeling of balance and provides an asymmetry that points direction from the sides, and welcomes front on.
This sculpture’s weathering-steel construction has a very organic quality to it, and as it ages it develops variations in patina that further its warmth. This thematically fits with a number of other decorative and functional pieces in rusty finish around the property.
